I was redirected to Hararie's blog when I was google-ing for bento box ideas last week and after browsing & clicking on the links she provided relating to Japanese food, I came across Tamago Kake Gohan, which I found to be a very interesting dish. Tamago means egg, Kake means mix, and Gohan means rice, hence Tamago Kake Gohan is rice topped with a raw egg and then mixed together with some soy sauce and optional topping of your personal choice, such as nori strips, furikake, spring onions/scallions, kimchi, and natto. I've never tried natto (Japanese style fermented beans) before, but according to Hararie, Tamago Kake Gohan with Natto & Nori is extremely delicious. I googled to see what Natto looks like and I was quite surprised to see how sticky & gooey it is!! I'm not sure if I'll like it, but I'll still love to try it^^
So according to Hararie, there are 2 ways of eating Tamago Kake Gohan. The 1st is cracking the raw egg on top of the rice, pour soy sauce over it, then mix together. And the 2nd is to beat the egg 1st in a separate bowl, then poured over the rice and mixed, after which soy sauce is poured over it, and then mixed again. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the 2, but I reckon it's just a personal preference as to whether u want to crack the raw egg straight onto the rice, or have it whisked 1st. As for me, I made my Tamago Kake Gohan using the 1st method.
So from reading my previous post, you would have known that I've run out of food in my fridge & even cooking oil!>< And since my honey just completed his exams 2 days ago, he's still recuperating from the stresses of the exam period, and is extremely lazy to step out of the house! So I havent been able to grocery shop. Hence last night was an awesome opportunity to try Tamago Kake Gohan (thank goodness there's still eggs left in the fridge!!).
Ingredients needed:
Rice (cooked, fluffed, & very warm; if you're using leftover rice, remember to microwave the rice to re-warm it!), Furikake (I'm using bonito flakes furikake ~ thanks Ochi once again for the info!), Raw egg (remember to check expiry date of egg!), and soy sauce (I'm using a Korean brand soy sauce, but still love Kikkoman's soy sauce!)
Scoop rice onto bowl. Use the back of the rice scoop to depress the center of the rice to make a shallow well. Then crack egg over the top of that shallow well, just like in the picture above.
Drizzle soy sauce over the raw egg & rice. I poured some soy sauce on a measuring cup, then slowly drizzled it over the rice & egg, because I'm afraid I wouldnt be able to control the amount of soy sauce pouring out of the soy sauce bottle. (Note: Too much soy sauce makes it too salty! Also bear in mind that furikake is salty, so if using furikake as rice topping for your Tamago Kake Gohan, remember to cut back on the amount of soy sauce!).
Sprinkle furikake.
Rice+Raw Egg+ Soy Sauce+ Furikake
Mix it all up & mix them well until...
it looks like this!
I'm using Thai long grain jasmine rice instead of Japanese sticky/sushi/short grain rice, so the end result isn't as smooth & sticky as it should be, but it still is very tasty! My honey loves to dip beef into raw egg whenever we have hotpot dinner and like I mentioned before, is a lover of eggs (especially hard-boiled ones), so when i introduced him this dish last night, he was over the moon! He had 2 bowls of Tamago Kake Gohan; I demonstrated how to make it the 1st time round, & he wanted to try to do it by himself for the 2nd bowl. Oh and he loved it so much that he had Tamago Kake Gohan for breakfast again this morning! My silly yet cute honey, he really makes me laugh sometimes.
And now, I'm sharing this video with you! I YouTubed "Tamago Kake Gohan" & came across it; I sort of understood how to make this dish through his demonstration. I totally dont understand a word of what he's saying, but it's good that he has demonstrative instructions!^^ This dish is extremely easy, requires minimal effort & ingredients, is low cost, and yet extremely nutritious!

hi mica!!!
tamagokake gohan is really popular in japan, but i don't like raw egg, so i hate it while my darling loves it. hahaha
but i am very glad to know that you understand japanese tastes!!! very surprised you tried this!!!
Raw egg? That's really interesting, I'd be a bit scared to try it unless I got food poisoning though!
Wahhh raw egg?? Looks so good but I'm hesitant because of the raw egg haha! Guess if I were to try it one day I'd scrub down the outer egg shell really well before cracking it open to try this. Wouldn't want to get salmonella =X
Oh! Heard that Bridesmaid was good! I never really saw the trailer to it so I don't quite know what it's about. Me too~ I need my blanket even when it's warm haha!
That's quite funny because I started to explore when I got a bf because I had someone to go with me. My friends are all spread out and busy because post-secondary edu and I don't think they'd be interested in exploring with me haha. Guess I should just continue to explore but alone~ ^^
wow! your page become really cute :D you are really good at rearranging those items. it takes me a lots of time, ... maybe i am getting old?! LoL
anyways, very interesting to know what you think is popular japanese food. but yes, ramen is really popular!!! i don't eat ramen (because you have to eat quickly before the noodles get soft) but many people love it and there are thousands or more of different kinds in japan!!! you can never try them out all!!! haha
